The study of violent extremism is entering a new phase, with shifts in academic focus and policy direction, as well as a host of new and continuing practical and ethical challenges. This chapter will present an overview of the challenges ahead and discuss some strategies for improving the state of research.
Despite progress, much work remains. As academics and policymakers, we are in the earliest days of establishing extremism as a credible, cohesive field of study. This chapter will look at the major challenges ahead and discuss some future avenues of study. The remainder of this volume will explore a number of pragmatic approaches to various important research questions in the field, with a focus on applications to countering and preventing violent extremism.
